Registering for the Greek exam in Cyprus: the 2027 windows

Registration for the May 2027 Ελληνομάθεια sitting opens on 1 February 2027 and closes on 14 March 2027. That is the one window a year for this exam in Cyprus, and missing it costs twelve months. The University of Cyprus works differently: it opens registration roughly two months before each of its several sittings and closes it either on the stated date or when the places run out, whichever comes first.

Ελληνομάθεια: May 2027

In Cyprus this exam is held once a year, in May, and Nicosia is the only examination centre in the country. Registrations are handled by the Examination Service of the Ministry of Education.

The fee is paid when you apply and is not refunded — not if you change your mind, not if you cannot attend on the day. That is worth knowing before you register at a level you are not sure about.

One thing that catches people every year: the October Ελληνομάθεια session is not held in Cyprus at all. It runs only at examination centres inside Greece, and only at A2 for professional purposes and B1. If you are in Cyprus and you miss the May window, October is not a fallback — the University of Cyprus is.

University of Cyprus: watch for the announcement

There is no fixed annual date to diarise here. The pattern from the sittings run so far is that registration opens about two months before the exam and stays open about a month:

Two things about these windows matter more than the dates:

• They close early when the places go. The announcements say registration is open until the stated date “or until available places are filled”. Places are capped per level. Apply in the first days of the window, not the last.
• An application is not valid until the fee has cleared through JCC. A completed but unpaid form holds nothing at all. Pay in the same sitting as you apply.

After registration closes, your exact date, time and venue arrive by email, individually, within the announced window. There is no published timetable to look yourself up on.

Before you register: pick the right level

Two decisions are made at registration and both are expensive to get wrong.

The level itself. B1 for standard naturalisation; B1 at four years and A2 at five on the fast track; for permanent residence there is no single rule. This is worth settling properly before February — see which level you need.

Which A2. Ελληνομάθεια certifies two different A2s, and the “for professional purposes” version has no writing paper at all. It is a different exam and a different certificate, not an easier route to the same one. Register for the level your requirement actually names.

Neither awarding body requires you to have taken a course. You can register directly for any level, however you prepared.

Keep your application details

Small, and it saves a bad afternoon in July. When results are published you log in with three things taken from your application: your examination centre code, your candidate code and your surname. None of them are emailed to you again at results time.

What the registration date really buys you

The window is the easy part — it is one line in a calendar. What decides the outcome is what happens in the ten weeks between registering in February and sitting in May.
